- For cooking dal
- 1 bowl tuvar dal
- 3 bowls water
- As per taste Salt
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 1/8 tsp asafoetida
- For tadka
- 2 tbsp cooking oil
- 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 chopped onion
- 1 Tomato
- 2 green chillies
- 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
- 1 tsp kasuri methi
- 1/4 tsp red chilli powder
- 1/4 tsp garam masala
- For Tempering -
- 1 tsp pure ghee
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
- 2 whole red chillies
- 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves
Steps to make to make Dal Fry
- Wash tuvar dal 2-3 times in running water. Strain the water and put it in a pressure cooker. Add salt, turmeric powder, asafoetida, and water and pressure cook till 2 whistles. Switch off the flame. Let pressure release automatically.
- Heat cooking oil in a wok. Add mustard seeds and when mustard seeds splutter add chopped onion and saute for 1 minute. Add ginger and garlic and stir well and cook till oil leaves the wok. Add chopped tomato.
- Cook on low flame for 2 minutes. Add salt, red chili powder, garam masala, and mix. Add cooked dal and crushed Kasuri methi.
- Cook till dal boils. Add water if required. I have added 1/4 bowl of water.
- Heat pure ghee in a separate pan. Add cumin seeds and red chili powder and whole red chili. When cumin seeds splutter switch off the flame.
- Pour this tempering on dal. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with chapatti or rice.
